Alt text is short for “alternative text”, which is a brief, written description of an image. Search engines cannot “view” images in the same way we do, so they use this to “understand” and distinguish the context of the picture. This is particularly beneficial if the image cannot be viewed for some reason.

Alt text is also essential for your website’s accessibility. Screen readers use it to “describe” the image to visually impaired readers, allowing search engines to crawl and rank your website more effectively.

Optimising alt text is vital for delivering a better user experience for all users.

Ultimately, image alt text needs to be specific and representative of the web page’s topic. Do not stuff your written image descriptions with keywords, as this could have the opposite desired effect, and you could see your website performing poorly in organic search results.
