Simply put, a backlink is a link from another website to a page on your website. You may also see them referred to as inbound links, as they are links from one website to yours.

The quality (Trust Flow) and quantity (Citation Flow) of your backlinks may help you rank higher in search engines such as Google and Bing. However, you should always prioritise quality over quantity. A single quality backlink can be more influential and valuable than 1,000 low-quality backlinks.

It is crucial to make sure the websites that link to you are relevant to your industry and what you offer. This will contribute to your topical relevance or your spam score (if you have lots of low-quality links).

Links are one of the key factors that Google considers in their algorithms and formed the basis of the original PageRank.  In fact, Google previously confirmed that backlinks remain one of their three most important search ranking factors.
