Cloaking

Cloaking
« Back to Glossary Index

In SEO, cloaking is a method used to serve actual users a piece of content, a page, or specific information that is different from what is presented to search engines (i.e. spiders or bots). This is typically done to improve a website’s search engine rankings for certain keywords.

It is classed as a negative SEO practice or black hat tactic.

Matt Cutts from Google describes cloaking as high-risk and a violation of their quality guidelines.

It is important to note that any instances of invisible or hidden text could also be considered cloaking. If a website is found to be persistently guilty of cloaking, they risk being blacklisted and having its content permanently no-indexed.
