Heading tags

heading tags
« Back to Glossary Index

Heading tags or elements in HTML that define a structure for headings in a document or web page. They start with H1 being the most influential, descending in priority order to H6.

In general, there should only be one H1 per page, and you will usually see this flagged in tools such as Screaming Frog if more than one H1 is used on a page. The H1 is used to help search engines understand the page’s topic.

Headings can be used as signposts to guide users through an article. They should describe what a section or paragraph is about so users know what to expect. Headings used in this way are helpful for user experience, as they allow users to scan through and find the exact information they need.

Search engines use them to understand the relative importance of content, but H1 is considered the most valuable.
