Landing Page

Landing page
« Back to Glossary Index

A landing page is any page on a website that a user arrives at after clicking a link, whether that is from a search engine result, a paid advertisement, a social media post, an email campaign, or any other source. In its broadest sense, any page can be a landing page, as the term simply describes the first page a visitor sees when they enter a site from an external source.

However, in digital marketing and paid search, the term “landing page” more commonly refers to a standalone page that has been specifically designed and built for a particular campaign or traffic source, with a single, focused goal (such as generating a lead, driving a purchase, or encouraging a sign-up). These dedicated landing pages are typically stripped of the usual site navigation and distractions, with every element of the page designed to guide the visitor towards one specific call to action (CTA).

There are two main types of landing pages in this context.

Typical Landing Pages

These are designed to warm up a visitor and encourage them to click through to another page, such as a product page or checkout, rather than converting directly on the page itself.

Lead Generation Landing Pages

These are designed to capture visitor information, typically through a form, in exchange for something of value, such as a free guide, webinar, consultation, or discount.

Benefits of a Well-Optimised Landing Page

A well-optimised landing page typically includes:

  • A clear, compelling headline that immediately communicates the value proposition.
  • Concise, benefit-focused copy that addresses the visitor’s needs or pain points.
  • A single, prominent call to action that tells the visitor exactly what to do next.
  • Trust signals such as testimonials, reviews, accreditations, or client logos.
  • Minimal navigation to reduce distractions and keep the visitor focused on the desired action.
  • Fast load times and a mobile-friendly design to reduce drop-off.

In organic search, a landing page is any page that Google decides to rank and serve to users in response to a query. A page that ranks well but fails to engage visitors, clearly communicate its value, or guide users towards the next step is wasting the traffic it earns.

For paid search campaigns, landing page quality is also a direct factor in Google Ads’ Quality Score, which influences both ad positioning and cost-per-click. Whether in organic or paid search, the effectiveness of a landing page (measured by metrics such as bounce rate, time on page, and conversion rate) directly impacts the return on investment of your search marketing activity.
