Time to First Byte [TTFB]

« Back to Glossary Index

Page Speed Insights uses the Time to First Byte (TTFB) to demonstrate Core Web Vitals, and most speed tools use it to measure website speed.

TTFB is measured in seconds (s) and is the time it takes to obtain information from the server and send it back to the browser. You could say that it is the time between when you navigate to a page and when the page starts to render.

The TTFB matters because the longer it takes for your page to render, the longer users have to wait to see the content on your website. With a high TTFB, visitors may abandon your site and decide to shop with competitors instead.
